I've been asking friends and other porn-lovers for some time now what they consider the best gay porn from the 1980s.

Oddly, almost no one mentions "Powertool" (Catalina, 1986). Has Jeff Stryker so poisoned his image that people can't stand his films any more? I am, admittedly, not a fan of Jeff Stryker. I loathe the guy. BUT... I think "Powertool" and "In Hot Pursuit" are outstanding films. (Naturally, these are Stryker's two first films.) There's something just sizzling in that first scene in "Powertool" where John Davenport nearly rapes Michael Gere on his prison bed while a sweating, overheated Stryker masturbates in the cell across the way.

Falcon films, also, seem to be missing for the most part from most people's lists. Yet, ask most gay porn fans, and they say that Falcon's earlier stuff was far superior to the body-shaved dreck that's issuing from the studio today like diarrhea from an over-fisted asshole.

I was flipping through my 1993 "Adam Film World Gay Video Directory," and started thinking about the best films of the '80s. I was going to limit this list to just five or six films, but then found myself compiling a list of every '80s film I think is worthwhile.

"All of Me" (Jean-Daniel Cadinot, 1983) -- A well-hung twink fantasizes about his sexual adventures while posing for a gay porn magazine.

"All the Way" (Hombres Productions, 1987) -- Jim Bentley stars in a story about guys who "go all the way." Yeah, that's the plot. Jim Bentley's fucking of tall, handsome Lou Cass is simply jaw-dropping, and Bentley's plowing of Brad Richardson comes in only a few degrees behind.

"The Axe Master" (Falcon, 1980) -- The foundation on which much of gay porn is built. Features "Mr. Egan Gets His Paperboy," "Track Coach" and "The Axe Master."

"Bad Boys Club" (Catalina, 1988) -- Notable for Johnny Davenport's seduction of Kevin Williams, Davenport's bottoming for Mike Henson, and Eric Radford's JO at the end.

"Behind Closed Doors" (Falcon, 1989) -- A horny frat-boy peers through keyholes at his frat's initiation night and sees plenty.

"Best Friends" (Various sources, 1987) -- Mark Jennings (aka Danny Parks) turns gay, only to suffer sexual and verbal abuse from his roommate. They separate, have sex, and come back together as lovers.

"Best Little Warehouse in L.A." (Catalina, 1982) -- The quintessential film starring legenday blond twink Morgan.

"Bicoastal" (Catalina, 1985) -- Tom De Simone, using the name "Lancer Brooks," directs this bisexual tale of a woman searching for her runaway husband. Cara Lott plays the wife and Tico Patterson her hubby. When she can't find him, or a job, she turns to nude modelling for money and is a big success. The final scene, where Lott confronts her husband and his lover, is a classic. Although not the first bisexual video, this was the first major-studio bisexual video. It still sets the tone for most bisexual videos to come.

"Big Guns" (Catalina, 1987) -- Mike Henson's going into the military. This sparks a number of sexual encounters as Mike fucks best friend Kevin Wiles, Kevin talks about his adventures, Mike reminisces about friend Johnny Davenport, Davenport fucks Kevin Williams, Mike goes into the Navy and friend Jeff Quinn fucks John Rocklin.

"The Bigger, The Better" (Falcon, 1986) -- The film that changed Matt Sterling from being an assemby-line director at Falcon into his own studio. It's the day in the life of teacher Matt Ramsey (Peter North), who is fucked by Rick Donovan. There are vignettes of boys fucking in the bathroom along the way.

"Billboard" (Catalina, 1989) -- Joey Stefano is an artist who has painter's block. Despite sexual doings among Joey's staff and a solid dicking by his best friend, nothing works. "Champs" (Kristen Bjorn, 1989) -- Four solo JOs and a four-way circle jerk. But they all feature professional body-builders. Bjorn turned the JO video into an art form with this one.

"Le Coursier" (Jean-Daniel Cadinot, 1985?) -- The adventures of a bike messenger, who must deliver dildo after dildo to various clients. It includes a scorching dildo gang-rape at the end.

"A Few Good Men" (Bijou, 1983) -- Sex linked to various aspects of being inducted into boot-camp.

"Flexx" (In Hand Video, 1989) -- Loose collection of tales as one person's encounter with another leads to more sex. Danny Brown's fuck by monster-dicked Nick Fabrini is legend, as is Les Stine's three-way with mega-dicked Neil Thomas and Brown.

"Foxhole" (Catalina, 1989) -- Award-winning tale about a Vietnam soldier's tales from the front. Everyone actually looks military! Considered the absolutely best military film ever.

"A Friendly Obsession" (Vivid Video, 1989) -- When a nephew visits his uncle, he's deflowered by both the uncle and his cousin. Andrew Michaels, a true bisexual who did only a few videos, is scorching with Tony Davis (in his best role ever).

"Full Exposure" (Jean-Daniel Cadinot, 1988) -- A rude young photographer can't get enough of his own models. He ejects his cute young lover, only to ask him for sex one more time. "Head Over Heels" (Various sources, 1988) -- Scott O'Hara, Mark Colt and Cody Feelgood (aka Scott Randsome, but before he turned his sweet body into a steroid disaster-area) all engage in auto-fellatio. Really excellent film.

"Heat in the Night" (Huge Video, 1989) -- Rex Chandler gives homeless guy Nick Minetti a bed for the night. "Hot Rods" (Catalina, 1987) -- Part sequel to "Big Guns," part sequel to "The Young and the Hung," part outtake from "Rock Hard" and part aborted Jeff Stryker project. The opening scene is the conclusion from "Big Guns," but the rest is...well... Film is notable for the Kevin Williams-on-a-turntable sequence said to have mentally scarred the actor.

"Huge" (Matt Sterling, 1982) -- Lee Ryder and Joe Reeve star. Four tales have nothing to do with each other. Notable, however, for beginning the preoccupation with young, hard bodies; big dicks, shaved crotches and shaved buttholes that is common today.

"Huge 2" (Falcon, 1982) -- Sequel to "Huge." Sterling would move to Falcon and abandon his own work. Best scene is cyclist Andy Fuller and nature-boy Wolf Ketner screwing like animals in the woods.

"Hunk" (L.A. Video, 1985) -- A cast of newcomers, including future superstars like Melchor Diaz, Grant Fagan, David Ashfield, Jesse Koehler and Chris Thompson -- deliver startlingly good performances in this tale about two former college roommates who have the hots for each other but are closeted.

"I Do!" (Jocks, 1984) -- Andy Fuller's getting married. His younger brother and best friend come to town for the wedding. Sex with the tailor, with the cook making the wedding cake, and each other (minutes before the wedding) ensue.

"Incessant" (Buckshot, 1988) -- Bisexual video showcasing two scenes. First, Michael Vincent and Cara Lott are brother and sister who seduce young Joe Venturi. Then husband Vladimir Correa gets a massage from Brian Estevez while wife Tanya Fox looks on and then joins in.

"Like A Horse" (Matt Sterling, 1984) -- Four tales told by Mike Henson: two real wrestlers fuck, a businessman fantasies about being fucked by a jungle-man, an uptight man gets raped in the alley by three leathermen, and an orgy in an Arabian tent. The segment in the jungle -- featuring a real leopard! -- with Brian Hawks is considered one of the hottest scenes ever in gay porn.

"Made for You" (Falcon, 1989) -- Rex Chandler stars with Brad Mitchell, Joe Cade, Butch Taylor, Mike Gregory, Jim Bentley and Danny Brown. What a change from the current crop of lookalike, shaved monstrosities we have today! Rex loves tricking, but needs more in his life. While the neighbors arouse Rex with their sexual shenanigans, he finds true love in Cade's arms.

"M.A.G.I.C." (Bijou, 1987) -- Superbly hung all-black cast. Each man gets a wish, and wishes for hot sex.

"Main Attraction" (Catalina, 1989) -- Probably the best video ever made about strippers. The best scene is horse-hung Matt Powers making gentle love to Vic Summers.

"Man Size" (Various sources, 1986) -- Michael Zen film about a writer (Chad Johnson) whose stories come to life. Not very inventive. But Zen coaxed amazing performances out of his cast (including Justin Rhodes as a top!).

"Master Hyde" (Live Video, 1988) -- Guys from the Christopher Rage stable -- Chris Burns, Keith Ardent, Al Eingang, Chris Rage himself -- all look at what kink makes them hot. Notable for a jaw-dropping auto-fellatio scene with Eingang where he swallows himself to the balls.

"A Matter of Size" (Huge, 1984) -- Perhaps the best video of the first half of the decade. Bill Henson is fucked by a football buddy. Then Matt Ramsey masturbates onto his face. "My Masters" (Live Video, 1986) -- Christopher Rage's signature work, in which men rape, brutalize, torture and piss on one another. Notable for the interracial cast.

"The New Breed" (Falcon, 1983) -- Kristen Bjorn and Bill Henson double-penetrated Nick Harlen. Mega-hung Tex Anthony makes his porn debut. Bjorn makes his final film appearance.

"New York Men" (Various sources, 1981) -- Two straight contrustion workers and their adventures in gay sex. Stars Eric Ryan and J.D. Slater. Sure, it starts out with a straight sex scene as Ryan bones his wife. But then Slater is caught up in a leatherman's orgy. Their paths cross time and time again, until finally Slater takes Ryan's cherry.

"Nightcrawlers" (Catalina, 1986) -- Life spent searching for sex at night is the theme of this one. Mesmerizing sexual performances. Notable for its self-conscious approach to sex, at a time when promiscuity was ending due to AIDS.

"Night Flight" (Falcon, 1985) -- Adventures in the airline trade. First mega-hung O.G. Johnson fucks the lucky Buster in the airliner's toilet. Then an orgy breaks out in first-class. "Out of Bounds" (Falcon, 1987) -- Kevin Williams tops! Williams is out riding his bike and is run off the road. Jim Pulver helps him. "Perfect Summer" (Falcon 1988) -- Water dominates in each scene. Considered both men's best work ever.

"The Pledgemasters" (Falcon, 1989) -- Showcase for Tom Steele, but starring Steve Hammond (before he lost his hair). Mike Gregory is an upperclassman who breaks a rule, and is punished. It's the hottest scene in the film.

"Powertool" (Catalina, 1986) -- Jeff Stryker's second film, but the first to be released. It contains a stunning, powerful, jaw-dropping first scene as Johnny Davenport rapes Mike Gere while Stryker looks on and masturbates. Although there are two weak middle scenes, Stryker amazes again as he rapes guard Tony Bravo. Brian Estevez delivers a famous handless cumshot before the film's uneven ending.

"Private Collection" (Hand in Hand, 1983) -- Three legendary directors (Tom DeSimone, Jack Deveau and Peter de Rome) contribute a bunch of shorts. One guy jacks off. "Rites of Spring" (Vivid Video, 1989) -- Jim Steele (aka Patrick Dennis) directed four films, each with a seasonal theme. The fourth in the series, a baseball team of gay men is too busy fucking to win games.
